Corporate employees on an average spend 60 minutes on social networking sites like Orkut and Facebook in office hours, leading to loss of productivity, a survey said.
“Close to 12.5% of productivity of human resource in corporate sector is misappropriated each day since a vast majority of them while away their time accessing social networking sites during office hours,” industry body Assocham said in a survey.
Almost each day, on an average, a corporate employee spends an hour, glued to various social networking sites such as Orkut, Facebook, Myspace “for romancing or otherwise driving some satisfaction out of it,” the chamber said. With this, an average corporate employee working each day is reduced by an hour from 8 hour to 7 hour, it said.
The results are based on responses of nearly 4,000 corporate employees in places like Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Indore, Mumbai, Pune, Chandigarh and Kanpur.
“As a matter of fact, growing use of browsing sites can be dangerous for overall productivity and IT companies have already installed softwares to restrict its use,” Assocham secretary general DS Rawat said.
The Assocham survey showed that 77% of workers who have Orkut account use it during work hours. Interestingly, 83% see nothing wrong in visiting social networking sites during the office hours.
“More than half of office workers use sites such as Orkut, Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace for personal use during the working day, and admit wasting an average of 40-60 minutes each day,” Mr Rawat said.
Orkut and Facebook are found to be the most popular online destinations among survey respondents. Keeping in touch with friends and family for fun and looking for new jobs are some of the main factors which attract the workers to social networking sites, Assocham said.

I agree with what research says, employees waist time on these social networking sites, this is really dragging the productivity. What IT companies has done that is very good that they have restricted these sites on the work place. But if the situation arises that employees goes against this practice, then one thing is there which can be done. These sites should be restricted during work hours, but when the employees are given break of 15 to 30 min in between at that time they can be allowed to go go through these sites n they can enjoy these social networking sites at that time only, n when the time gets over, these sites should be again restricted. So, this can be one solution to make Employer n Employee both happy.
